Alcohol

PAST-Ashlee

What was the temperance movement? How did the Second Great Awakening inspire it? Who often led these efforts and why? Do you think a temperance movement should happen today in the United States?

The Temperance Movement was a social reform effort to encourage people to drink less alcohol. The Second Great Awakening inspired it because in the 1800's Americans consumed 7 gallons of alcohol per year. Women often led the efforts because their husbands always getting drunk, spending money, etc; and they had children. I think that the temperance movement should happen today because alcoholism is just getting worse these days, people drinking under age, abuse, money, domestic violence, etc;

These are woman that are against drinking.

This shows what happens to a drunkard over time.

PRESENT-Jerelle

In the 1830’s the average American consumed seven gallons of alcohol per year which caused social problems like family violence, poverty, and criminal behavior. This led to the progression of the temperance movement. Today the legal drinking age in America is 21. Do you think that is fair?

It is indeed unfair that the legal drinking age in America has been established as 21 years-old. It should be lowered from 21 years-old to 18 years-old. Some may argue that the high drinking age was initiated to lower the incidents of drunk driving amongst 18, 19, and 20-year-olds. However, the current legal drinking age is not effective in preventing drunk driving. This is proven in the petition titled Lower the Drinking Age from 21 to 18!, in which the author states, “After some 30 years into this experiment, it has been proven that the higher drinking age of 21 has not led to less drinking among the target age group.” On top of that, it also reveals that, “When you take a look at the minimum legal drinking age in other countries around the world, you'll find that the vast majority--roughly 77%--have drinking ages of 18, or sometimes even lower, as it is not uncommon to find a number of European countries that set their drinking age at just 16.” It is unfair that the U.S. has a higher drinking age than numerous other countries and yet it does not help in regulating drunk driving amongst the target age group. In short, the legal drinking age of 21-years-old in America should be lowered to 18.

  1. Hi Ashlee,
I agree with you, I think that the temperance movement should happen today in the United States. I think this because of the effects of heavy drinking. People who are drunk could be violent, drive carelessly and damage those around them, if not, themselves. Drinking too much could also lead to many medical issues. A temperance movement taking place would act as a warning or a wake-up call for these people, making them aware of who they are hurting. I got some of my information from this website-

  2. Hello Jerelle,
With your information, and some I have researched, I agree with you. I find the current drinking age unfair and unreasonable. I think this way because the current drinking age has seemed to cause more problems than solutions. For example, now, underaged teens are, in a way, more driven to drink in secret because of this law, which can cause problems. Underaged teens could get alcohol poisoning, but fear being caught by the police, so they don't seek help. Issues like this has been a reason for the legal drinking age to be changed. My opinions were based off of this website-

  3. hi authors i agree with jerelle on the topic of the alcohol age limit. In other countries the age limit is 18 and they dont have issues with alcoholism. yet the united states the age is 21 and were suffering with millions of people with issues with alcoholism. its causing more issues for us, its unfair and they should change it

  4. Hello Authors,
I agree with the drinking age being unfair in the United States. It is not to support drinking alcohol at a young age but, 21 is a little over the age limit for drinking alcohol. Also, other places are below 21 and some even below 18 depending on the alcohol. Even if it is a "safe age" to keep everything control it makes people get carried away that they can finally drink at 21 and over drink and become addicted to alcohol so yes, I agree with your opinion. 5. Dear Jerelle,
I agree with your opinion that the drinking age limit should be lowed to 18 years of age. It is not fair that America is keeping the high drinking age of 21, while many countries have the legal drinking age of 15. This makes people very excited for their first time getting a drink, which may cause serious accidents. However, in some European countries, since the drinking age is lower, kids know how much alcohol they can handle, and won't go crazy at an older age. Also, the high level of drinking is not really helping the U.S. much in drunk driving issues. This is proven by the graph in the link below, which compares the amount of American drunk driving incidents to other countries:

  6. Authors,
I would have to disagree with Jerelle. Lowering it wouldn't work in my opinion because they are not as mature. Studies show that the age people reach physical maturity is 25, so raising the legal drinking age to 25 would be very beneficial. Although it may seem unfair for the US to have the drinking age so high, its only for safety. For example, someone 14 years of age buys a car. What are the chances that he/she will get into an accident, rather than an 18 year old? Its the same with drinking. 7. Authors,
I also think that the temperance movement should happen today in the United States. I feel that if it happened today, the effects of heavy drinking may be helped, and if not, solved. When people are drunk, they spend money, hurt people, or even say things they don't mean to. Like Serena said, drinking too much could lead to medical issues. 8. I agree with the temperance movement, and I think they should do it again today. Alcohol addictions have gotten a lot worse today then they were back then. Also now a days people are starting to do drugs which makes it even worse. 9. Dear Classmates,

I disagree with everybody except Josh. I think the legal drinking age is a good year. When your 21 your officially a adult. It shouldn't be lowered because younger people might not be as responsible when it comes to drinking. If a lot of adults aren't responsible with their drinking what makes you think that a teenager can. Also drinking isn't healthy and teenagers body's are still developing and growing. 10. Dear bloggers,

In the Temperence Movement we learn this movement was led by woman who detest men drinking. We can see that even this period of time woman would take charge even if men were considered more powerful than them.

  11. Dear bloggers,

I agree that the drinking age should be lowered to 18 since there could be a decrease in drunk driving and a decrease in teenagers drinking since they think they are bad if they drink underage wouldn’t this prevent from more alcoholics to take place in the U.S?

i liked what you said about having a type of test like those test you take before getting your drivers license. but i question about how can the test prevent drunk driving or irresponsible drinking?

  13. Dear Jerelle,
I agree with your compelling points made on lowering the age limit. While researching articles, I found yet another debate that revolved around lowering the legal blood alcohol limits for young drivers. Similarly, both limits being lowered could prevent the accident rate in our country. The article I found stated, ".If all States adopted .00 or .02 percent limits for drivers ages 15-20, at least 375 fatal single vehicle crashes at night would be prevented each year."

even though i am against underage drinking there are benefits to lowering the drinking age. some benefits is you wouldn't be afraid to call the cops if you were 18 and drinking. https://thestir.cafemom.com/tweens_teens/141719/teens_watch_friend_die_because

  17. Dear Jerelle,

I agree with the idea of lowering the drinking age. I say this becuase there are many underage drinkers and if something were to happen to somebody they wouldn't go to the hospital or call police in fear that they would get in trouble. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/thrillist/is-it-time-to-lower-the-d_b_9633254.html

  18. Dear Authors

I firmly agree that the drinking age is needlessly higher. The purpose of a higher drinking age is to lessen the amount of problems in the country but the problems only get worse. In many situations, people underage feel more tempted to drink because its illegal. This makes problems do to alcohol rise. The age should be 18 becuse in many of the countries where the age is 18 there at much less problems due to drinking. check this link for more https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2014/07/16/us/legal-drinking-age/index.html

I agree that the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. We're just having more alcohol-related problems now than before. Article that supports my thinking: http://www.indiana.edu/~engs/articles/cqoped.html
